Stretch and Reach

At the Denver Botanic Gardens, there is a glass-domed building about the size of a bowling alley. The glass dome extends down the sides and its framework gives it a honeycombed look. The glass allows all available sunlight to reach the flora inside.

Inside, a jungle. Even on an icy January day, heat and humidity in there stifles like a steam sauna. The unsuspecting visitor becomes engulfed in long, tall, climbing things with leaves big enough to choke a woolly mammoth. Ever see a woolly mammoth skeleton in the Amazon? You never will!

Just as in the jungle, there are quiet places in the building's deepest heart that, even on bright, sun-bleached days, are dark as moonless nights. It was in such a place that I saw these flowers reaching for the light, and I thought, "Reach, Little Flowers. Stretch and reach."
