7, 8 and 9 Shambles, York

The 15th and 16th century facades of numbers 8 and 9 Shambles retain later versions of the shamels, or shelves, which give York's most famous street it's name. Early documents describe a large number of butchers being based here. In the 19th and early 20th centuries this association continued though many of the plots had acquired houses and various other types of shops over the years. In 2022 there is only one butcher a meat pie seller, in Shambles and one in Little Shambles, a street which leads off from it. Monk Bar Chocolatiers, a handmade chocolate retailer, occupies the ground floors of number 7 and 8. The upper floors are let as offices with their own front door, visible between the large windows.
