The Golden Fleece, Pavement, York
The Golden Fleece is one of York's oldest public houses with a licence traceable to the late 16th century. It also one of the most haunted places in the city, a reputation put to good use by frequent "ghost tours" for tourists. The present facade dates from the mid 19th century but the building behind the facade may be contemporary with the 17th century Herbert House, the large timber framed building to the right, as early drawings show this to have had three gables to Pavement rather than the two that exist today. This drawing was done as a commission for a visitor to York who stayed in the Golden Fleece before the pandemic of 2020-21. It was based on an earlier sketch of the building in my sketchbook.
