Boot scrapers, St John's Street, Oxford
There is a great variety of boot scrapers bmoutisde the front doors of the houses of St John's Street. The street was developed piecemeal by speculative builders after St John's College sold off pltsbin the early 19th century. The three and four storey town houses are built on narrow frontages with thin party walls to maximise income for the builders. The boot scrapers were clearly provided a variety of firms. I sketched them on my way back to my Rewley House accommodation after dinner, by street light. One lady asked me what I was doing. When I explained she gave a quizzical look and then went into number 58.
