Unfortunately, the optimism of the late 1950s / early 1960s , where marchers sang protest songs and showed considerable solidarity for the CND , had more or less evaporated by 1972. The press reported that only 400 marched and apparently the atmosphere on the march was rather dismal. However, the promise of free music boosted numbers at the concert itself to around 10,000 ( about ten times the local population ) .
