Bleak Hall II
Photo from "Edisto Island - A Family Affair" by Amy Connor & Sheila Beardsley. Botany Bay Heritage Preserve on Edisto Island, South Carolina. This house was built by the Townsend Family to replace Bleak Hall I which burned around 1865. Bleak Hall II was demolished by Dr. Greenway, the new owner of Bleak Hall and Sea Cloud Plantations after 1933. After Dr. Greenway's purchase the land was called Greenway Plantation, but Greenway renamed it Botany Bay. In addition to demolishing the house, Dr. Greenway purchased the Wescott Tract and sold the island called Botany Bay Island, an island now mostly reclaimed by the ocean. He also built the original parts of what is now called the "Big House", a name that is pure Edisto. The pieces were put together, and an addition were built by the Meyers later.
