Tarr Steps, Somerset
A couple of days ago we made a visit to Tarr Steps, an ancient clapper bridge over the River Barle in the Exmoor National Park, Somerset. It was quite nice to find it so quiet as during the summer months it is a popular tourist destination.
Was thinking about photographing the bridge and contemplating what a difference leaves on the trees would have made, when these three riders with two horses each suddenly appeared. Couldn’t resist the opportunity to make the photograph a bit more interesting!
Tarr Steps is one of the best known ancient monuments on Exmoor and believed to date from the Bronze Age (3300 to 1200BC). It consists of 17 spans of large unmortared stone slabs each weighing between 1 and 2 tons. Some of the slabs have been washed away during extreme flooding but only around 50 yards downstream. In recent years they have been numbered to ensure ease of rebuilding once any flooding subsides.
