models of Confederate ironclads

Eight models representing the short-lived Confederate States Navy's most powerful fighting ships - casemate ironclads.

With severely limited resources, Secretary of the Navy Stephen Mallory managed to organise the construction of enough armoured warships to give the Yankees cause for concern. After the famous CSS Virginia's sortie into Hampton Roads, 'ironclad fever' gripped the South and 'gunboat associations' sprang up to fund the building of these ungainly but tough craft.

Their careers were chequered, yet each one of these ships could and often did make a big difference to a theatre of war. With the South's scarce resources, their existence at all was a miracle.
