As the monitors became critical components of US naval strategy during the Civil War, it was decided that double-turreted monitors should be built. Here we see the one-off USS Onondaga of 1864 alongside a contemporary single-turret design; Onondaga's hull is much fuller at the extremities to cope with the disposition of twin turrets.
