As a means to increase efficiency of operations and enhance communications among all design disciplines, Zimmerman began the process of a space needs analysis and consideration of potential sites for re-location in the Greater Milwaukee area. The firm identified a need for 40,000 s.f. in the Milwaukee area for our staff of 100+ professionals. As a 100 year old business with a strong story to tell, an added criteria was to develop a building that would have a similar story to our own. A 25,000 s.f. warehouse building which sat among a complex of century old buildings, originally developed utilized by the public gas utility, in Milwaukee’s emerging Menomonee River Valley, was identified as a potential candidate. The open space structure allowed for a free-standing mezzanine to be incorporated which provides adequate space for current needs as well as future expansion of staff. Although the exterior of the building retains the intent and character of original designer, Alexander Eschweiler, the interior design solution is open office concept with a focus on collaborative spaces, in which full or partial teams can meet face-to-face on a moment’s notice to resolve project issues.
Since occupying the structure earlier this year, the firm has hosted a visit from the US Secretary of Commerce (Gary Locke) and has received recognition from the Business Journal of Milwaukee as the 2011 “Central City Business” award winner in the medium sized business category. We have also hosted a variety of other industry functions in our “gallery space” including MATC’s Gallery Night which brings together building industry representatives with MATC interior design students.
