Mosque of Omar

The Mosque of Omad opposite the entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is not a coincidence that the mosque is located just across from the Church and towers over it, because in the 7th century the Muslims who occupied Jerusalem wanted to intimidate and draw away Christians. There was an entire city in which to build a mosque but it was built just next to the church, not exactly a sign of tolerance. In Egypt churches may not be constructed within a radius of half a kilometer from a mosque. Today the loudspeakers of the mosque are so loud that everyone in or near the church is bombarded by them five times a day, the 'call to prayer'.
