Aeneas, the son of Venus and Anchises, leaves burning Troy, carrying his father who holds the palladium, the image of Pallas Athena that would become the sacred symbol of Rome. The little Ascanius glances round, looking for his mother Creusa, daughter of Priam, who has disappeared.
Marble group made after a wax model by François Girardon entrusted to Lepautre in 1696. Made while the artist was staying at the Académie de France in Rome, from 1697. Transported to France in 1715 and installed at Marly. Finished with the assistance of Jacques Bousseau in 1716 and installed in the Tuileries gardens the following year.
Transferred from the Tuileries gardens in 1989
