In this photograph taken 17 February 2007, Lala Bhatt poses with a puppet at his home in Kathputli (Puppets) Colony in New Delhi. Puppeteers tell stories on everything from medieval kings to AIDS, but in the age of the DVD, making a living from the centuries-old Indian craft is a struggle. Originally from the western state of Rajasthan, Bhatt hails from a nomadic tradition of folk artistry, but like many of its practioners, he now lives in a slum in a frenetic city where he is trying to adapt and keep the art alive.
