AnaTete (Aunts)

Alabaster Stone

In Shona culture, the father’s sister (tete) has an important role in a child’s life. The tete has the role of mentoring nieces and nephews in important issues such as courtship and marital problems. Her role has been so important that if child engages in immoral activiy, the burden of blame primarily falls on tete as opposed to the child’s parents. These sculptures are about my tetes and the different challenges they have endured.
