Lake St. Clair, "Unofficial Great Lake"

Michigan is sometimes called "The Great Lakes State". In addition to thousands of inland lakes, both large and small, Michigan shares coastlines of four of the Great Lakes: Michigan, Superior, Huron, and Erie. The fifth Great Lake is Lake Ontario.

Lake Saint Clair, as shown in the picture is a large lake by any standard, except when compared to the Great Lakes. L.St. Clair is 26 miles long (42km) and 24 miles wide (39km), but it is still 17x smaller than Lake Ontario.

The St. Clair River connects L. St. Clair to Lake Huron, and the Detroit River connects it to Lake Erie, making it continuous with the Great Lakes waterway system.

Some people refer to Lake St. Clair as the "Sixth Great Lake".
