Icon of Michigan's Agricultural Heritage
The D.H. Day Farm once was a 400 acre spread, home to 400 hogs and 200 Holstein cattle. Reportedly, there was an orchard of 4000 cherry and apple trees, and crops to feed all of the animals. These outbuildings, built in the 1880s and 1890s, dominate the landscape when viewed from the road and from my favorite perch atop the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes.
Today the farm is privately-owned, but because it is situated within the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, there is a stipulation that the owner must preserve the historical appearance of the property. The farm, and the nearby historical buildings in Glen Haven, Michigan (which are owned by the National Park Service), are important icons of Michigan;s agricultural heritage.
