Skutustadagigar Pseudocraters

The area around Lake Mývatn was fascinating. Weird lava fields and formations from an eruption about 2,000 years ago dot the landscape. Active vents, hot springs, and mud pots are common on the east side of the lake. The south end of the lake is dominated by these pseudo craters, formed when gas and steam explosions happened as lava flowed over ancient wetlands. Add in a touch of fall color and you get a memorable landscape.
