57603 "Tintagel Castle" Paddington Station 28 06 2006
57603 sits at the buffers after bringing in the sleeper from Penzance in its original GWR livery awaiting the drag back to Old Oak Common by hire in loco 47813 "John Peel".
The livery was given the derogatory nickname of "fag Packet" by enthusiasts due to its similarity with a brand of smokes in the UK 😊
57603 was originally built as D1830 at Brush Loughborough's Falcon Works (Works No. 592).
It was delivered to BR on 18/03/1965 at Toton depot (Shed 16A) and was a no heat version used for freight work.
In October 1973 under TOPS, it became Class 47/3 sub class No. 47349.
Moved around the various freight depots (Crewe, Tinsley. Toton, etc), its final official depot from 1998 was Frodingham in the DFLT pool with the Post BR Freightliner sector.
By this time it was owned under privatisation by Porterbrook.
In June 2003 when retired with many of its classmates, it got a reprieve when Porterbrook earmarked it for the 3rd Sub Class of "Bodysnatchers": the Class 57/6s for Great Western and their London/ Cornwall sleeper service.
It went back to Brush, was stripped out, re-engined with an EMD 12-645F3B + got ETH installed for the first time.
Released in December 2003, it has now in 2022 done almost 20 years work on the sleepers (a credit to the Brush team who re-engineered it).
Overall, in July 2022, it is over 57 years old (very appropriate 😊👍)
