This is hard to explain in writing, but I'll give a shot anyway :) This fabric had a 24 inch repeat, which is huge, so I bought six repeats or four yards. I could use six repeats for a one block wonder quilt top or any kind of hexagon. However, I want twelve repeats to make a Dresden plate, so I'm using both sides of the fabric, with the fabric split down the fold line. In the picture, there are two sets of six stacks and I've laid them out on each other in the section where you can get twelve repeats. You can see that there will be sections left over on all the sides that won't match up for twelve repeats, but they will yield six repeats. So now I'll cut off those sections (saving them for hexagons) and get my sections in the center that will give the twelve repeats for my Dresdens. There, clear as mud :)
