Six-Person Line

This photo relates to my summer research in that I went on a month-long bike trip down the west coast to do an ethnography of the cycle touring world. Along my journey, I met people from all over the country with completely different objectives for their self-contained bicycle tours. This picture was taken on a day when we had six people biking in a line, trading off who led every mile--a pair of 26 and 28 year old guys from Indiana who got all of their gear for free and were averaging 30 miles per day, a pair of 17 and 19 year old guys from West Virginia who trained for months and were going 80 miles per day, and myself and my boyfriend who are 21 and 23, didn't train and got all of our gear at the beginning of our trip in Seattle.
