"To God & to Posteritie - Heer lyeth the body of Sir Anthony Denton, knight, one of the honorable band of pensioners to the late renouned lady Queen Elizabeth & also to our now sovereign lord King James. Whose manie eminent partes, both of minde and body (equally according to nature, arte & grace) in his youth around the Court , in his latter yeers , the Country he doth worthylie , beloved everywhere with the best, approved to the last period of his life which (in assured hope of a better ) with much patience and confidence, in the faith of Christ, hee finished August 27th 1615 aged 54
In memorie of whose manifold worth, his deer & doleful wife Elizabeth eldest daughter of Thomas Isham of Langport in the countie of North-Hampton, esquire, erected this monument.

Anthony, born in 1561 was the son of Margery & William Denton, gentleman of Southwark Surrey & Stedham Sussex who shortly before his death in 1565 had acquired from Alexander Colepeper / Culpepper the rectory of Tonbridge including "all lands, tithes and the like in Tunbridge Warde alias Le Townewarde and Southborowe Warde, parcels of the said rectory in Tunbridge". becoming with Henry Carey Lord Hunsdon a kinsman of Queen Elizabeth, a leading landowner in the town.
Only aged 4 at the time of his father's death, his mother was granted his wardship with an annuity from the estate, until Anthony received license to enter into his inheritance on April 29th 1583.
Meanwhile Anthony matriculated at Brasenose College Oxford on December 8th 1578 and entered the Middle Temple of the Inns of Court in 1581.
He was knighted in 1603 in the royal garden at Whitehall before the coronation of James l .
He m (May 25th 1601) Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Isham of Lamport and established a country residence at Tonbridge in addition to his 2 London houses
By 1602 he was one of the honourable band of pensioners (50 knights in rotation) to provide a royal bodyguard to the monarch, standing guard with a gilt battle axe in the presence chamber and accompanying the sovereign to the chapel royal or the House of Lords. He was probably recruited by the captain , Lord Hunsdon .
On August 26th 1625 he unexpectedly died at the aged of 54.
Anthony & Elizabeth had no children and she later (aged approx 45) m2 Sir Paul D'Ewes of Stow Hall flic.kr/p/PsFqX (stowlangtoft) in Suffolk bringing him a substantial dowry and portion.
Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Thomas Isham of Langport (Lamport) Northamptonshire
