"AD 1621 Erected and dedicated to the memory of Sir Benjamin Tichborne, knight and bart, and of Dame Amphillis his wife, daughter of Richard Weston of Roxwell in the county of Essex esq, one of the Justices of the honourable court of Common pleas; who having lived together with with inviolate affection by the space of 49 years, had issue foure sonnes, Richard, Walter, Benjamin knights and Henry Captain of ye Lifforde in Irelande & three daughters Elizabeth, Anne & Amphillis, after he had fulfilled ye number of his dayes in ye favour & grace of his Prince, being a gentleman of ye Privie Chamber to ye most illustrious monarch James, King of Great Brittaine, France and Ireland, & having with loyalty to his soveraine, and integrity to his country, borne and performed all ye offices of dignity in this county, hath here chosen together with his beloved wife to sleepe with his fathers in this chappell founded by his auncester Sir Roger Tichborne knight, in ye time of Henry ye first, where they expect ye blessed resurrection of their bodies & in ye merits & mercy of Jesus Christ our alone Saviour, to be partakers of ye comfortable invitation, Come ye blessed & receive ye kingdome prepared for you. A good life hath ye dayes numbered but a good name endureth for ever (Eccle. Chap XLl v Xiii)
Alabaster tomb of Sir Benjamin Tichborne 1631 and 2nd wife Amphillis Weston
Benjamin was the son of Nicholas Tichborne of Tichborne Park, Hampshire and 2nd wife Elizabeth sister of James Rythe
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Tichborne when she was on her way to Basing in 1601. and as High Sheriff at the accession of James I in 1603 immediately declared his loyalty to the new Stuart monarch. As a result the king gave permission for Catholic services to be held in the north aisle of the church which still continues and became the resting place for many subsequent generations of the family. He was created baronet on 8 March 1621
