formerly a marener who dayed a husbandman - Kenn Devon

Skull and crossbones on the memorial to John How 1688

"Heare lyeth the body of John How of this parish - formely a marener who dayed a husbandman the 26th Day of January 1688. Memento Mori"

( A husbandman was a small-scale tenant farmer who ranked just below a yeoman in rural social status. They were essentially the "average farmers" of their local communities, working modest plots of land primarily to sustain their own families.

The term comes from the old meaning of "husband" (from the Old Norse hūsbōndi), which meant a "householder" or "master of the house" rather than a married man, combined with the verb "to husband," meaning to till or cultivate the soil.
