Church of St Philip & St James, Rock Northumberland
A 12c church with Norman features in an estate village 5 miles north of Alnwick.
Probably built as a Chapel of Ease to Embleton c1176 consisting of a nave & chancel separated by a rood screen. Sadly this fell into disrepair and by the end of the 18c and was in such a dilapidated state that no services could be held.
Its saviour was Charles Bosanquet flic.kr/p/Kb3Jx who bought the manor in 1804 & in 1806 came to its rescue. He also had a timber gallery constructed in 1824 over the west door to provide a pew for his large & growing family , and his Hall servants .
In 1855 his son Rev. Robert William Bosanquet decided that further improvements should be carried out, employing architect Anthony Salvin, who was living mainly at Alnwick to supervise the Duke of Northumberland's alterations at Alnwick Castle.
This involved the building of the semi-circular apse at the east end of the chancel, the rebuilding of the vestry, and the restoration of the old Norman and Early English windows, In 1866 a north aisle was added by architect F. R. Wilson. The north wall was moved stone by stone, including a Norman window and the corbel table.
The fine west door, with its rich zig-zag work, and the north wall of the nave are, externally, much as they appeared about 1176.
On the north wall of the chancel are stone shields with the arms (3 swine) flic.kr/p/2iFbyjX of the Swinhoe family, who owned Rock Estate from c 1370 0 - 1560. There is also a single shield bearing three water bougets the arms of the Proctors who lived at Rock in the early 18c .
There is also a monument to Colonel John Salkeld, the last of the line of the family who owned the estate from 1620 t- 1705. A a bold and consistent supporter of the Stuarts, the monument records his 'constant dangerous and expensive loyalty'
The large three-manual organ was built in the north aisle in 1881, was a gift from Holford MacDowall Bosanquet, fellow of St John's College, Oxford, a mathematician and musician.
In the south wall of the nave there is a stained glass window by Leonard Evetts commemorating Robert Carr Bosanquet, archaeologist and Director of the British School of Archaeology at Athens, and his wife Ellen Sophia, their son Charles Ion Carr Bosanquet, first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, and his wife Barbara flic.kr/p/2iFbNoU
