William's loyalty to the monarchy led to impeachment under Cromwell and his work for the restoration earned the gratitude of KIng Charles II

William was made a Privy Councillor, and, like his father, Lord Lieutenant of Essex. He was comptroller of the household to both Charles II and James II. .
