Anagram: Joannes Best / Es, at ne nobis

All that is mortall of him here doth lie;

His name noe more than his blest soule can die.

In whom the Baptist's impresse we may stampe;

He was a burning and a shining lampe.

On earth of knowledge hee had got such store,

That only Heaven it selfe could make it more.

Hee tooke death on him as a new degree,

And did proceed to immortalitie.

The silent marble will too weakly praise

this paradox of worth to future dayes.

Each heart for him will be a liueing roome

Unlest be one more marble than this tomb"

John dressed in surplice, doctor's hood, ruff, etc. stares out holding a book in his left hand as he would have done whilst preaching in the pulpit . He was vicar here from 1604 until his death in 1637

His (1st ?) wife Jane widow of Robert Kyrle of Walford has a brass memorial nearby flic.kr/p/6DfZSg
