Under an arch on the north wall of the chancel lies John Mertun dc1537, engraved by Midlands alabasterers . www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/5S328Z

Standing between carved pillars under an elaborate canopy, he is dressed in rich ecclesiastical mass vestments , his hands in prayer his head on a pillow with tassels at the corners, with chalice with wafer and richly embossed book / missel on either side He was rector here from 10th October 1507-1537.

Around the outside of the tablet is a latin inscription ‘Hic iacet dominus Johis Mertun quondam rector istius / ecclesiae nec non / capellanus Thome Stanlei comitis de derbi qui obit tali dei / … " ('Here lies Master John Mertun sometime rector of this chuirch and former chaplain to Thomas Stanley, Earl of Derby who died ……)

The date of death is not filled in which probably indicates the tomb was prepared in his lifetime c1520s.

On the front of the tomb are 2 chalices resting on shields. At the west end near his head is carved a book underneath which is one of the earliest known representations of a pair of spectacles www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/jBh2K4
