Stinsford Dorset

George Pitt of Stratfield-Say in the county of Southampton esq who died Feb 28 1734 in the 72d year of his age and lies there interred with his ancestors. ....- monument erected by his widow, based on a design by the architect James Gibbs

George Pitt was MP for a number of Dorset and Hampshire constituencies from 1694 -1727. He owned Stratfield Saye (later the home of the Duke of Wellington) which had been bought by his grandfather Edward from the Dabridgecourts in 1629. In addition to this estate, George inherited valuable colliery interests in north Durham, which had been acquired by his father in 1686 For many years he was closely associated with his kinsman, Governor Thomas Pitt, who entrusted him with ‘paternal authority’ over his children in 1706 and with the custody of the famous Pitt diamond in 1710

 

Born in 1663, he was the eldest son of George Pitt 1694 and Jane 1676 ++ daughter of John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers and Catherine daughter of William Parker, 13th Baron Morley. And widow of George Brydges 1654 6th Baron Chandos of Sudeley & William Sidley / Sedley 1656 (++ sister of Thomas 3rd Earl Rivers flic.kr/p/aXQRb2 )

He was distantly related to William Pitt the elder, Earl of Chatham

 

He m1 Lucy d1697 daughter of Thomas Pile of Baverstock Wilts. and Shroton Dorset, widow of Laurence Lowe of Shaftesbury

(his marriage was not happy. they separated and his wife ‘was forcibly abducted from London by her husband ... and kept locked up at a seat of Pitt’s at Melcombe, in Dorset)

daughter of George Trevelyan of Nettlecombe The Old Manor house Stinsford was abandoned after he rebuilt Kingston Maureward House to the east of the church c1717.

The Frekes and Piles were great landowners in Dorset and Wilts - Lucy Pile maried Lawrence Lowe and on his death without issue released lands at Houghton to Thomas Pile and Elizabeth wife of Thomas Freke flic.kr/p/4KnNHw of Hannington for life with reversion to George Pitt of Stratfield Saye The Pitts also inherited Cern Abbas another Freke property.

 

 

The Stratfield Saye estates passed from William to his brother John
