Callander, Davies & Ricks, Christmas Card 1944
This is the very optimistic Christmas card sent from the firm Callander, Davies & Ricks (Ladies Costumier) in 1944. A carload of people driving off to Brighton using unrationed petrol. A defunct bomb is used to roll the lawn, fire-fighting equipment is trashed, a disused Anderson shelter is planted over, and birds nest on top of the siren. A lady orders 1000 pairs of stockings and two gents happily light cigars while a lady, bathed in plentiful light is eating chocolates. A huge hot bath is run way past the plimsoll line and a gent walks past people with papers marked RESTRICTIONS whilst carrying papers marked PROGRESS. The fruit shelves are laden with bananas and a gent waves aside the offer of black market goodies. Crates of drinks are delivered to the house and the pump for extinguishing fires is used to water plants in the greenhouse.
I am not sure who the artist was the 1944 card but can make out the initials ROTK on the bottom right of the card.
