1040 Argyle Tower at Edinburgh Castle

Argyle Tower

-----------------

The area of the north and dricribed as"restoration in extreme form", the rebuilding of the Argyle Tower was first in a series of works funded by William Nelson.

West of the Argyle Tower are largely occupied military by buildings erected after the castle became a major garrison.

The new structure was named the Argyle Tower,in the belief that the 9th Earl of Argyle Archibald Campbell held here prior to his execution in 1685.

Named after Archibald Campbell 9th Earl of Argyle, who is suppose to have been imprisoned in the chamber above the Portcullis Gate before his execution in 1685.The top part of the Portcullis Gate is entirely the imaginative creation of Hippolyte Jean Blanc, the victorian architect who also restored the Great Hall.Beneath is a vault which housed the mechanism for the sixteenth-century portcullis.
