The house was built by Charles Raine in 1848.Eliza D.Raine's estate sold to Wilmer McLean in 1863.The McLean House was a former tavern. One of the first battles of the American Civil War took place on the farm of Wilmer McLean at Bull Run,Virginia, the first battle of Bull Run(fist battle of Manassas).Soon after the battle the Mclean's seeking to avoid the war, moved to the village of Clover Hill,Virginia(whose name was change to Appomattox Court House because it had just become the county seat),about 3.1 miles (5km) from the Appomattox Station where the came into Appomattox,Virginia.

Because the first battle of Bull Run,fought on July 21,1961 took place on Wilmer McLean's farm about 120 miles (190 km)to the north in Virginia,it can said the Civil War stated in Wilmer McLean's backyard in 1861 and ended in his parlor in 1865.(Neither event, however, marked the true begining or ending or hostilities.)McLean was a retired major in the Virginia militia. He was too old to enlist at the outbreak of the Civil War and decided to move to get away from the Civil War.After the war,he would say of himself that he moved because he loved peace, however he made a small fortune runner surger though the Union blockade. He was also a slave owner and ther are slave quaters next to McLean house.Nonetheless,on Apirl 9,1865,the war came back to Mclean when general Robert E.Lee surrenderer to Lieutenant General Ulysses S.Grant at the house. His house was also used on Apirl 10,1865 for the Surrender Commissioner's meeting over the next few days as the headquaters of Major General John Gibbson of the United States Army.

The terms of the surreder were."The officers to give their individual paroles not to take up arms against the goverment of the United States until properly exchanged, and each company or regimental comander to sign a like parole for the men of their commands",neither side arms of the officers nor their private horses or baggage"to be surrendered, and as many privates in the Confederate Army owned horse and mules, all horses and mules claimed by men of the Confederate Army to be left in possesisons.

The McLean house has meaningful value because of its assocation with site og General Robert E.Lee's surrender to Lieutenant General Ulysses S.Grant on Apirl Apirl 9,1865.

After the documents signed many Union soldiers purchased some of McLean's furnture, however, some was stolen.McLean sold pitcure of his house after the Civil War,however he failed financially.

Although he had made considerable fortur smuggling surger,McLean's money was in Confederate curency which became worthless with the collape of the Confedercy, and he nearly ruined by the end of the war.In fall of 1867 after the war the McLean's returned to Mrs.McLean's estate in Prince Willam County,Virginia. The banking house of Harrison,Goddin, and Apperson of Richmond,Virginia, obtained a judgment against Wilmer McLean when he defaulted on agaist the property. The house, by then known as the "Surrender House"was sold at pubic auction on November 29,1869, and purchased by John L.Pascoe.Records show he rented it to the Ragland family of Richmond,Virginia.

The renter Nathaniel H.Ragland then purchase the property for $1,250 in 1872.He died sometime between then and 1891.His widow sold the property in 1891 for $10,000 to a Captain Myron Dunlap of Niagara Falls,New York.
