River Cresswell - Rollei Retro 80s
Sometime last year I read an article in a respectable magazine on how to become a better photographer. (It was written by a well known photographer someone with an international reputation, who makes regular contributions to the magazine). In it he advised that in order to get better we should stop taking pictures of the same thing(s). My immediate reaction was negative. From my experience in other parts of life, the opposite is often true – practice makes perfect, etc. So, I decided to do the opposite, and kept taking pictures of the same things, learning from my mistakes, exploring what I might do to improve the outcome and get closer to my objective(s).
I had been really disappointed with my first pictures as they fell short of my expectations – I mean, I have some pretty good kit and surely that was enough to get good pictures? LOL. Anyway, back to the experiment. This is one of my latest pictures of the Cresswell River at Lawrenney Quay. By taking the same scene using different lenses, camera settings and processing them in different packages I feel like I'm moving towards my goal. And, more importantly, I know what I've changed, so I know what has given me the results. If I'd taken different places I could not be sure why some worked and other didn't. I can now (do and have) apply these changes/settings and I'm get nearer to what I'm looking for.
As always, these are my opinions and would love to know what you think.
