•For the term of his natural life. Tasmania: Launceston, spring

19A1449

Ten Japanese macaques were given to Launceston in 1981 by its Japanese sister city, Ikeda, in exchange for 10 wallabies. Strict Australian biosecurity laws prevent importing new monkeys from overseas, leading to a severe lack of genetic diversity and ongoing inbreeding. The City of Launceston voted overwhelmingly in December 2024 to sterilize the male macaques for animal welfare reasons. The current troop will live out the rest of their natural lives, meaning the park will become monkey-free over a span of roughly 25 to 30 years.
