Original Gravity Band
51/365:20th August,2010
25 year reunion of this fantastic RnB combo originally for Leeds & the north west.
Still crazy after all these years, guys!
Quite some time ago, three engineering students, at the then Leeds Poly, were desperately trying to find a way of avoiding any kind of work whatsoever, when they presently hit on the idea of making a great deal of noise by manipulating various musical instruments. 'Twas at this point that Simon, Tim & Iain formed what the history books will refer to as The Original Gravity Band. Originally the vocalisations were supplied by one Kevin Dobson, whose whereabouts today are not known. Stories of alien abduction are completely made up for the purposes of this bio and it's more likely that we just lost touch. (Kev, if you read this, give us a bell; We're sure you owe us all money!). Soon the services of Mr. Adrian Peever were enlisted, after Simon's glowing report that "he sings a bit ". Even though he was from Crewe we didn't hold this against him and asked if he would be interested in fronting the band. Pressure was relieved from his throat just enough to allow him to gargle "errgh, yeah" & the rest is, as they are said to say, history. The band immediately embarked on a relentless world tour over the next few years (mainly in the Leeds & Crewe areas) which saw them grace the stages of countless venues, such as the 'never-to-be-forgotten' Duchess of York (RIP), the Eagle Tavern (Hello Les!), The Express at Crewe (we didn't knack the window), The Duck and Drake (happy new yeeeaaaarrrghh!!) . . . It was always worth experiencing the band supporting landlord Les Moon's incredibly passionate version of 'High Heeled Sneakers'. And, then, of course, there is The indestructible Grove Inn. Who knows? perhaps one wet and curry-fragrant night, you'll be taking shelter in the longest shadow in Europe (what IS that damn thing? Is that King Kong swinging from the top?) when suddenly an ear-shattering racket will blast once more from behind a frosted pane . . .
