Saturday, August 18, 2018 -- Oil Pad
I am aware that as we use our equipment, we are wearing it out to some extent; and in my shop, no greater sensitive and precise mechanism exists than the Monotype moulds. Even though what I have was saved from immediate destruction, the factories are gone, where a company could send their moulds back to be refitted. I have index cards for some of my Super Caster moulds indicating the original service record for them. In the twenty year life span of the machine at the University of Toronto Press (1962 to 1982) some moulds were back to Monotype several times.
Here is one specific area that is "wearing out". Shown is the location of a circular fibre pad to lubricate the mould in operation (Shown is the underside of the 18 pt. Inset). I confirmed with Duncan at the Type Archive that these pads are no longer available. In this picture, one can see how type metal fragments accumulate in this area, so I am careful to keep the mould clean. The pictures were taken after a run and the mould inset was subsequently cleaned up and put away.
