115_8592 Bond star Fairey Huntress
Boathouse No. 4 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard last Tuesday 11th April 2017. This exhibit is a Fairey Huntress and I found it most compelling. In addition to the grand exhibits I always enjoy wooden boats having grown up with them on the Norfolk Broads and curated them on the Firth of Clyde (with a museum director who went onto direct the Royal Naval Museum at Portsmouth). Boathouse No 4. is a shrine to wooden boats of all types and signifcant apprentice schemes ensure the skills for their survival will be taught. The notion of a Fairey Huntress may make you contemplate a Swordfish Torpedo Bomber but Fairey built many boats. The point about this design is that it is a Bond star and the location that From Russia with Love used was Loch Crinan which we stayed beside in 2010.
