Auden in the North Pennines can be quite surreal. Reflecting on this Oxford>American gay poet of the 1930s totally happy underground in half happening mines around Rookhope and rewriting fall stories is usually intense. On our way to the Lord Crewe Arms at Blanchland yesterday, we drove through a sharp and cold shower falling on tar previously warmed by brilliant sunshine. It was a steamy sight. — in Slaley, Northumberland. KODAK Digital Still Camera
