Phnom Oudong, Cambodia

Odong is a beautiful, peaceful and quiet spot about 45kms north of Phnom Penh.It doesnt get many tourists, as tourist information in Cambodia is somewhat lacking but im sure if more people knew about it it would get a lot more visitors. Thankfully, for now it is a great relaxed day out from Phnom Penh.

It was once the royal capital of Cambodia, abandoned in 1866 by King Norodom when he moved his court to Phnom Penh, it is now the centre of Cambodian Buddhism. The main hilltop temple complex includes both old and new parts, as some parts were damaged by American bombing and by the Khmer rouge.

There are fantastic views over the countryside from the hilltop temple, numerous temples in the surrounding area, monkeys, the Headquarters of Cambodian Buddhisms temple complex and Khmer Rouge Mass Graves/memorial (Including skulls and bones from victims in a glass case).

The breeze on the hillside temple is a welcome relief from the the stifling heat of Cambodia!
