2/12: it's cold out here!
One of the reasons why I joined this group was because I was hoping to push myself in developing some technical skills. Although I've owned Photoshop for a year and a half, I've still never really learned to work with layers (or adjustment layers) - mostly I've just used it for cloning things, or occasionally for doing something like focus stacking. That's limited the sorts of effects I can introduce in photos.
This image started as a shot of Duncan on a snowy February day, with a really boring white background. I decided it was crying out for a texture, so (armed with a video tutorial and a brief on-line tutorial) I acquired some textures and set to work.
Alas, my version of Photoshop didn't seem to do what the video tutorial did when I was trying to remove Duncan's image from the background using "refine edges". I finally had to go to "Plan B" and use "blend mode". I did play with several different background textures - with and without color. (My first attempt is shown earlier in my photostream). At Karen Havenaar's suggestion, I blurred the background on this one first. I like it the best of all the results I've had today. It's not perfect, but we're nearing the end of the month, and I don't think I'll have time for anything else.
