290310 Road kill

A sub adult male otter in good condition apart from a facial injury sustained by impact with a road vehicle. 10lbs weight and 38 inches nose to tail. Killed on the A39 between Bilbrook and Washford.

Thanks to the motorist who placed it on the verge and notified Somerset Otter Group so that the corpse could be collected and sent to Cardiff University for posty mortem examination.

Post mortems on otters reveal so much useful information not only about the species itself but about the state of the river catchment on which it had been living.

If you find any dead animal at the roadside please 'phone Somerset Wildlife Trust on 01823 652400 with details of the location. Outside normal hours please 'phone the Environment Agency emergency number - shown in every telephone directory.

It is helpful if you can place the corpse next to a prominent landmark, such as a roadsign, but so as the corpse itself is hidden from view of passing traffic. Never put yourself at risk from traffic. The most important thing is to report it.. Don't worry if it was you that hit the animal - these things are unavoidable - but it is important that a post mortem is carried out as animals are indicators of so much that is important to human health.
