Heraldic windows in St George’s Chapel.
Above the panels are three coats of arms relating to the Marquess. He became both Earl de Grey and Earl of Ripon in 1859, then Marquess of Ripon in 1871. In 1869 he became a Knight of the Garter.
The lower two panels show the De Grey and Ripon (Robinson) arms with an Earl’s coronet and the Garter.
Above these are the arms of the Marquess of Ripon, quartered into six to show his ancestry. It is surmounted by the coronet of a Marquess, the Garter and the Collar of the Garter.
It contains the Marquess’ motto ‘Qualis ab incepto’, which means ‘As from the beginning’.
The stained glass was executed by Saunders and Co from sketches by H W Lonsdale and cartoons by Fred Weekes.
