The Blue Fig, by multi-award-winning Bangladeshi documentary photographer Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, is a poetic yet realistic exploration of the impact of climate change, undoubtedly the greatest disruption the world will face in coming decades. As ecological and environmental justice organisations continue to report, the consequences do not affect everyone equally. Often, the countries of the Global South, which contribute least to the rise in the planet’s average temperature caused by CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, are the ones that bear the brunt of its immediate effects in the form of extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and in particular, rising sea levels. The Sundarbans Forest on the coast of Bangladesh, the world’s largest delta, is one of these affected areas, and the inhabitants are being forced to migrate as climate refugees or to stay and face an increasingly hostile environment. Between resilience and reinvention, these scenes from the Sundarbans foreshadow the future of coastlines around the world.
