Tilt Cab Man
Redbridge box in 1981
The Signalman at Redbridge with orange high-vis on, is keeping an eye on me as I stand on the level crossing to photograph his box. A type 3 LSW box opened in 1884 but now with the small window panes replaced, it had a central wooden section as seen here, and stood on a brick base which may of been from an earlier structure. It contained a Stevens Tappet frame of 22 levers which was increased in size on a number of occasions, the last time in 1943 when it was increased to 33 levers.
This was to be its last summer in operation as it closed as part of the Southampton area resignalling scheme on 28th February 1982, when the area came under the control of Eastleigh panel box.
