The current layout of the gardens of the Alcázar dates from around 1955, and roughly correspond to the former vegetable gardens, which were surrounded by walls and fortifications and were supplied with water from the river via an intricate irrigation system of aquaducts and channels.
The garden's borders have changed throughout history, yet the current design - divided into three different levels centered on fountains and long pools as reinterpretations of the former moorish design - still respects the overall lines of the historic original structure and especially the inflow from the Aqua Fontis Aureae, a former roman aquaduct supplying the gardens via a reservoir on the upper terrace.
