For certain subjects I know I will reach for one of my old manual film lenses that my Dad gave me. Some comments / questions I received about the lens recently made me pay more attention and consider what exactly I love about this old lens as I used it today so I could give a proper answer. For one, it feels good in the hand, it's compact, solid and feels well made, in the way things used to be made. No plastic, only metal and glass, like my old compass. The focus wheel turns as smooth as silk, not too loose, not too tight., right behind it is the aperture ring and using it feels more intuitive than a thumbwheel. It doesn't have Auto-focus or image stabilization or nano coatings but I thought about how people used to do a lot with simpler tools, like navigating the oceans with only a compass and a look at the stars. As I focused on my subject in the early morning light I felt a kind of affinity with the camera and scene that was like zen moment. That's my discovery for today. Then, I admit after I took this shot, I went back in the house and slept until nearly noon.
