you complete me

Shooting at the beach especially getting down low to make certain shots takes some care because of all that sand everywhere and moisture of the salt air. I bring along a yoga mat sometimes and that works great if you have someone who will roll it up and carry it for you afterwards since the mat will be covered in sand as well. When I am alone or don't have the yoga mat I've developed this rather ungraceful technique.

Getting down on knees and elbows To get the camera as low as possible here I am using an upside down paper coffee cup. Push it down onto the sand half-way and you have a clean platform to rest your camera on. I look in the viewfinder to compose and get focus so there is an awkward moment when my bum is sticking in the air. My hubby loves to take shots of me while I'm doing that, he thinks it's adorable but I know I look like an idiot. After using this technique you will get up and find you have sand on your knees and elbows so be careful of those areas.

Since I am so often shooting at the beach I have to be serious about cleaning my gear. When I get home I wash my arms first or shower if I am very sandy. Then I use a soft brush and a rocket blower all over the outside of the camera, followed by a wipe down of the entire body and lens with a disposable lens cloth. I almost forgot...I keep a girls elastic hair band around the ring where the lens meets the body to make an extra seal at that place. My efforts seem to be working, I have not needed to clean my sensor yet in almost 2 years with this body.
