Gray-headed Swamphen

The Gray-headed Swamphen (Porphyrio poliocephalus) is a species in the rail family (Rallidae) that is native to areas in southern Asia and has become an avian interloper in the United States. It's original appearance in south Florida is thought to have occurred in the 1990s due to the escape of captive individuals. Its poulation has expanded northward into north Florida and bordering states. It inhabits marsh habitats where its long legs and toes facilitate walking on mud and marsh vegetation. Many field naturalists are now "railing" against the Gray-headed Swamphen because of its potential to negatively impact populations of native rail species.
