Ben MURPHY, actor

Benjamin E. Murphy (born March 6, 1942) is an American actor. He is known for his role in the ABC television series Alias Smith and Jones.

Two young outlaws, fleeing from justice in the Wild West, take on the identities of "Smith and Jones", carrying out good deeds in expiation for their past misdeeds. Throw in blazing sixguns, galloping horses and girls in crinoline skirts and you have all the ingredients for a popular tv series. Alias Smith and Jones, with Ben MURPHY and co-star Peter Duel as Kid Curry and Hannibal Hayes, became a popular light entertainment show. Regrettably, due to the different chemistry between the new co-stars, it never recovered from Peter Duel's tragic death, when Roger Davis took up his role.

When Ben visited New Zealand, I took the opportunity to photograph him and invited him out to our home for dinner some days later. My wife and two teen-age daughters flew into a frenzy at the thought of such a Hollywood heart-throb coming to the house. However, Ben turned out to be unaffected by the flim-flam of Hollywood and they were soon at their ease with him.

Ben is a serious athlete, running and playing tennis, so I arranged for him to go out with the Auckland Police Joggers Club for a run. Some years later, I opened a magazine to see a full-page spread of Ben, running along the beach at Malibu, wearing a tee-shirt with the New Zealand Police crest emblazoned across it.

He is still at work and we got a kick out of seeing him in a recent episode of JAG.
