AMX-HOT
The GIAT Industries AMX-10P is a French 1st generation IFV, produced starting in 1973 as a direct response to the innovative Soviet BMP-1. The AMX-10 chassis proved exceptionally versatile, and acquitted itself well in numerous specialty configurations. Perhaps one of the most fearsome variants is the AMX-10 HOT, named after the Haut subsonique Optiquement Teleguide Tire d’un Tube (High Subsonic, Optical, Remote-Guided, Tube-Launched) anti-tank missiles it carries. Four missiles are mounted on twin launchers on either side of a small turret, and 20 additional missiles are stored within the troop compartment. ATGM carriers like the AMX-10 HOT were considered crucial force multipliers for NATO forces, as it greatly boosted anti-vehicular firepower at relatively low cost. The HOT in particular was a potent weapon for its era, having a range of 4 kilometers (~2.5 miles), outranging most Soviet equipment it could encounter. AMX-10s of all variants remain in limited service today.
