St. Mary's Church Castlegate York
A church has stood on the site of St Mary's Church in Castlegate since pre-conquest times, and although most of the present church is 12th-13th century there is a dedication stone in the building which dates to around 1020.
St Mary's church was one of the city's most important churches and is said to have been an early minster. The building was saved for future generations by the York Civic Trust, in 1972, after fourteen years of dereliction. Its spire is the tallest in the city.
It is now the home of The York Story, a heritage centre which displays the history of the city in models and reconstructions and audio-visual displays.
